Wifi installations to out buildings, sheds, summerhouses, holiday lets etc.
Cat6 Hard wired connection
Hub to outbuilding ≈ £190 - £350 Secondary router ≈ £55 - £500 |
Especially since Covid people want to have wifi everywhere so they can work from home effectively. You may have an office in your garden where you need access to the internet and telephone. You may have a summerhouse that you would like to send the teenagers too, so you can have some peace and quiet.
For the most reliable Zooming and internet you cant beat a hard wired CAT6 connection, It's as good as plugging straight into the router. If you have a fast 200 - 900 Mbps connection from your Service Provider, CAT5 100Mbps can now be the "slow" bit or the bottle neck. As a result I now only use CAT6 1000Mbps cabling. |
Wifi for holiday lets
Rather than having a whole new telephone & broadband line put in, save a fortune by extending your current wifi to the holiday let.

FAQs about Wifi
- Why does my internet drop out ?
- Why is the WiFi slow ?
- Why doesn't the Wifi go very far ?
- Why doesn't the wifi on my laptop work ?
- Why do i keep getting Diagnose Connection Problems ?
- Do I have to keep using the router I was given ?
1 Why does my internet drop out ?
There are many possible reasons for this :-
* Connection problems exchange to modem router - see broadband faults
* The Service Provider is off line - If the main router lights are on [ i or dsl or :) or B ] and you are sure you have a good connection router to computer it could be the service providers equipment is faulty or down for maintenance.
* The router can't handle so many devices. The router your service provider gives you are not always the best quality .As they are posted out in the tens of thousands they are not going to be the bees knees usually they’ll just be basic get you going job. Some routers can only handle 2 devices at any one time causing your Xbox to drop out mid online game when your daughter starts watching you tube on her iPhone.
Again a better router will help . Make sure it can handle all your devices at the same time.

2 Why is the WiFi slow ?
Firstly prove its the WiFi that is slow by switching off the wifi, then testing the speed via a direct ethernet connection.
5 Ghz seems slower with iPads, iPhones than 2.4Ghz. If you have the option on your router of two wireless networks, opt for 2.4 Ghz this has speeded up my iPad no end. In my EE router I have turned off 5Ghz.
Again see above reasons but Wifi , although some routers "claim" to have speeds of 150 , 300 or even 600 Meg in reality they have a slow ping rate and slower speeds than standard CAT5e ethernet, that works at a guaranteed 100meg.
E.G. BT "BAD BOY" home hub down load speed
Connected over WiFi. - 20meg
Connected over CAT5e - 60meg and this would be limited by the phone lines max speed.
CONCLUSION :- Hard core on line Gamers use a wire.
Other solutions are :-
* Send the data through the mains wiring using a Ethernet over power or home plug device. Doesn't work across 3 phase phase's and is dubious across circuits I.E upstairs Mains to Downstairs mains.
* Put in a second wireless router to cover the dead spot/s . These can work in 3 different ways :-
1 - Wirelessly router to router ( least reliable ,second wifi device can only be placed in the first wifi's signal area )
2 - Connected via Ethernet cable or network cable ( most reliable ). Ideal for use in a second building like a holiday let. Also the phone line can be incorporated in the same wire making it ideal for a garden office.
3 - Connected via an Ethernet over mains device , this sends data through the mains wiring (won't work across different phases).

3 Why doesn't the Wifi go very far ?
Wifi can't penetrate thick walls, metal radiators, fridges, toasters, lintels etc. Change the position to avoid line of sight obstacles. Higher is better. Can it go on top of the cupboard or upstairs ?
The wireless router and the cordless phone can interfere with each others signal. Separate by 1 or 2 feet.
Send the internet through a Cat6 cable & have a secondary router in the "west wing". Use an ethernet over power device such as Solwise AV500

4 Why doesn't the wifi on my laptop work ?
- it could be switched off , make sure its switched on there may be a button on the laptop to do this it can also be done in software.
- your laptop may be so old its WLAN standard is 802.11 b , but your modem router may not support this. Most routers are now 802.11n or 802.11ac. Old router and new iphone may not work very well also New router and old laptop may not work so well either. More info here wikipedia

5 Why do i keep getting Diagnose Connection Problems ?
- Restart EVERYTHING - rourter, pc, ethernet over power units, everthing. (good old turn it of turn it on again).
- There is a fault exchange to router see broad band faults or there is a wireless fault. Leave it a full day to see if it comes back - it could be BTOpenreach ding maintenance.

6 Do I have to keep using the router I was given ?
No, you can buy your own router. All you need is the Broadband user name and password supplied by your ISP.
